Identification: Almost the size of a bulbul, it is larger than the green bee-eater. It has a black stripe through the eyes, deep chestnut throat and a blue rump and tail. It’s forehead and crown are mainly green. Sexes are alike. The juvenile bird has an extensive but less well-defined rufous throat.
Size: 23-26 cms.
Habitat: Near jheels, streams and near water in more wooded tracts.
Nesting season: March to June predominantly
Distribution: Breeds in the North and Northeast India and winters in Sri Lanka
