Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycricorax Nycticorax)

Identification: The adult is unmistakable with a sticky body and a thick neck. It has a black crown and mantle with grey wings and white underparts. Sexes are alike. The juvenile is boldly streaked and spotted.

Size: 58-65 cms.

Habitat: Ponds, marshes, lakes, mangroves, mudflats, canals and creeks.

Nesting season: Mostly June to September.

Distribution: Widespread resident of India
