Alaxandrine Parakeet (Psittacula eupatria)

Identification: A large green parakeet with a short massively hooked red bill and a visible maroon patch on both the shoulders. The female lacks the rose/pink collar of the male.

The call is deeper and powerful than the rose ringed parakeet and their flight is also laboured.

Size: 53 cms.

Habitat: Well wooded areas, orchards and plantation. Roosts among leafy trees accompanied by loud screams and chatter.

Nesting Season: December to April ; varies locally

Distribution: Widespread resident of India; Bangladesh, SriLanka and only limited to Karachi in Pakistan
